Science fiction novel “Sea of Salt” is complete and headed to publisher

Just finished editing process, and closing in on sending the manuscript off to the publisher for “Sea of Salt”. I also just started the process of getting “Salt of the Earth” completed for audio books. Matt is back as the narrator. As a frequent listener of audio books I think Matt is in the top 10 percent of narrators and has made my earlier books better than the original 🙂 As hard as it was to start “Sea of Salt”, by the time I finished I could already see the next story clearly, so I have already started to write “Arthur Park”. Other than in dystopian novels I haven’t seen anything like the setting for this one, and I’m moving quite quickly through the first several chapters. If you want to know more let me know

Science fiction novel development for “Sea of Salt”

Aloha – A quick update today, “Sea of Salt” has made it through edit number 1 which includes oral reading. The grammar, spelling, consistency of plotline, etc. is complete. Now its time to go back in deeper and consider sections. Is there enough description to hold the reader without boring the read? We (I have readers) will start picking apart areas that need wordsmithing or more. Step 1 went much faster than I expected this time. I’m pretty happy with the story and would be okay with submitting it to the publisher now, but I still want to do some further cleanup. Meanwhile, the first book in this series, “Salt of the Earth” is available in paperback and e-book versions. It is about to head to audible for development.

Beating Writer’s Block and Finishing a Sequel: My Sea of Salt Experience

Aloha! I’ve been a bit distracted these past few weeks. About a year ago, I started writing the sequel to Salt of the Earth—and, for the first time ever, I ran into something new: writer’s block. This book is under contract, which may have been part of the problem. I had to write it. The first hundred pages of the draft were pure drudgery. (Not exactly a good marketing line, is it?) But I kept pushing forward, and something magical happened—the story began to come alive. Yes, I had to circle back and clean up those opening chapters, but once the characters and storylines started to take shape, the words began to flow. As is often the case, the last hundred pages came in a rush. I couldn’t stop writing. I wanted to reach the end and see where the story would take me. For those curious about my process: yes, I outline, but very loosely. I prefer to let the story unfold naturally within that framework. This time, that final hundred-page sprint consumed me—it was fun, exciting, and deeply satisfying. Most of the novel follows my usual writing style, though I experimented with a couple of new techniques in two chapters. I’m eager (and a little nervous) to hear how readers respond to those sections, good or bad. So, When Will Sea of Salt Be Released? Not soon, I’m afraid. I’m entering what I consider the toughest part of writing: editing. First comes an oral read-through with my ever-patient partner. We’ll catch basic factual and wording errors, but this isn’t deep editing yet. Then comes the serious round—rereading the entire manuscript, red pencils in hand (figuratively), and tearing into the flow, pacing, and grammar. After that, the manuscript goes to my favorite line editor for her expert take. The upside? I’m skipping traditional publishing this time. I’m too old to spend a decade in that mill waiting for the novel to reach print. If all goes well, Sea of Salt might be out by Christmas—but more likely by May 2026. In the meantime, I plan to share a few chapters and excerpts on social media and would love your constructive feedback along the way. Should I Use AI for Editing? That’s the lingering question. I often use AI tools (like this one) to proof and edit my blog posts, and I’m generally happy with the results. But when it comes to a full novel, I’m hesitant. Would an AI edit help polish the work—or might it smooth out too much of my voice? I’m curious to hear your thoughts.

New Audible version of “Project Lilliput” coming soon

Nervous energy. I wonder if I could use it to fuel a spaceship. I am awaiting final approval by ACX for “Project Lilliput” to launch as an audible book. It should be approved today, but that is only a projection. So far, all five of my other books in the Orion’s Spur series have fared much better as audible books so the release of “Project Lilliput” is something I’m excited about. As soon as it is released I will be looking for fans to read “listen to” the book and hopefully give a favorable review (if merited). If you have an Audible account and would be willing to accept a free copy let me know. I’ll be setting out another more specific invite as soon as it releases. But first come first serve. I’ll have ten free copies from Audible I can share.

The Gorge A surprising sci-fi thriller with romance, survival, and a high-stakes mystery

I’ve been a fan of traditional YA science fiction novels for over 60 years, and while I don’t typically go for suspense or horror films, I made an exception for The Gorge (2025)—and I’m glad I did. The film centers around a mysterious and deadly gorge in an undisclosed northern hemisphere location. Guarded by advanced automated weapons and monitored by highly trained individuals on either side, the gorge seems to contain a powerful, hidden threat. These “keepers”—one from the Western nations and one from the Eastern Bloc—maintain order and system checks but are also lethal weapons in their own right. We meet Levi, a former Marine sniper recruited to serve a one-year term as the western keeper. On the eastern side is Drasa, a deadly assassin with a past shrouded in mystery. The two are instructed to remain isolated and avoid any contact. What follows is an unexpected slow-burn romance, initiated by the exchange of handwritten messages on improbably large sheets of paper—an odd detail that somehow works. Adding to the tension, the previous keeper, upon completing their year, is killed during extraction—highlighting just how secretive and dangerous the assignment truly is. As Levi and Drasa grow closer, Levi constructs a massive zip line across the gorge to meet her. But his return trip is sabotaged, triggering mines and forcing him to parachute into the forbidden gorge. Drasa, fully aware of the dangers, arms herself and jumps in after him. Without giving away major spoilers, I’ll stop there. The Gorge blends horror, science gone rogue, and survival against overwhelming odds. The visual effects are impressive, and the tension builds with every scene. Levi and Drasa’s bond adds emotional weight to the action-heavy plot. While the story holds together well through most of the film, the final two scenes feel a bit like a recycled twist from The Bourne Identity—a slightly disappointing end to an otherwise gripping movie. Still, I strongly recommend The Gorge to fans of sci-fi thrillers, especially those who enjoy character-driven stories with a pulse of romance.
